James sent us this interesting press release and images relating to the Becks Canvas initiative, which supports up-and-coming artists.
Contemporary art is a living part of our cultural heritage. Encouraging raw ability and building a broader public appreciation of the diversity and excellence of artistic accomplishment is a vision which Beck’s has long supported.
To this end, we have championed talented artists without compromise for over 20 years. As a bold statement of commitment, Beck’s has given outstanding artistic talent a truly original canvas to work on. Our label. Collaboration over two decades reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of contemporary art; Gilbert & George, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Tim Head, Sam Taylor-Wood, Jake & Dino Chapman, and Tatsuo Miyajima to name but a few.
The result of these partnerships has not only been the creation of a unique library of contemporary artwork, but also providing a significant platform for emerging artists to reach a greater audience. This year we plan to take the project to a new level by literally placing contemporary artwork in the hands of the public.

2008 sees a landmark for the Beck’s art programme, with the launch of Canvas. For this very special project, we needed a very special partner. The Royal College of Art is a particular kind of ideas factory unlike any other. As the world’s only wholly postgraduate university institution of art and design, the college boasts a global reputation for artistic excellence and an unrivalled creative environment. College alumni and internationally admired artists Tracey Emin, Tim Noble and the Chapman Brothers all created Beck’s labels during the 1990s. Then, as now, Beck’s was striving to support those determined to express themselves creatively. A partnership with the College presents a great opportunity to achieve this goal.
Four young artists will be selected by a panel of judges from the Royal College of Art to showcase their art on the labels of over 27 million bottles to be distributed nationwide from August 2008. The first bottles to receive the new labels will be launched at an exclusive gallery exhibition to be held at the RCA.
In the endless state of motion that is contemporary visual art some elements remain constant, but never static. Beck’s Canvas marks an evolution of our ongoing support for emerging artists and our vision to bring inspiring and challenging artwork to a broader public.

A Celebration Of June Poster Collective
8th - 12th July / 10am - 8pm
London College of Communication
Typography Studio
Elephant & Castle
London SE1 6SB
Free Admission
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to our upcoming exhibition; A Celebration of June / 8th - 12th July, hosted by London College of Communication and curated by 3 current students of the university.
The exhibition displays 30 A1 posters produced by 30 creative individuals from throughout Europe, each offering their own interpretation of a day in June. As a collective the posters present a unique insight into the month of June, covering a variety of creative disciplines and providing a range of personalised approaches.
With 365 days in a year it has become an effort to fully understand the context of one single day in our own calendar. We often fail to recognise the true significance of events in our day and the impact it has on our lives.
The intention of the poster collective is to offer an identity to every single day in June, producing a poster display that presents a wealth of information about the days involved and finding something unique with each day of the month. The exhibition offers a great insight into the period of June, presenting personal interpretations from both Artists and Designers.

Dirty Mouse favourites Graham and Rob (AKA Teacake Design) have been in touch to bang the drum for their end year show. Their work is ace - they’ve sent me some corking pieces including that dapper invite pictured above.
They wrote, “We are two soon to be graduated students from Manchester School of Art Working under the alias Teacake we have built a strong portfolio of type led graphic design.Teacake is something quintessentially British, inventive and conscientious. We love visual organisation, people, places and creating a tangible interaction with those who see our work. This has subsequently led to us having a strong affiliation with design for print and a passionate obsession with typography and identity. Humour, irony and visual puns embody our work and we have developed a strong interest in copy writing.”
The Degree Show is open to the public from Saturday, 14th June until Sunday, 22nd June 10am - 4pm in the Chatham Building, All Saints Park, Manchester School of Art. If you can’t make the show then see their work on their blog or on their main site.

Rich at the previously linked Breakmould has emailed in to tell us of a collaborative effort between himself and Toby Evans in producing a tip-top promotional postcard for the Substance/08 graduate showcase event (for a select group of final year students at UCCA Farnham).
Rich says about the postcard, “The cards have been designed to promote the site, with a list of participating students on the reverse. Printed using 2-colour litho (black and fluoro green) on GFSmith 350gsm Pistachio Colorplan Smooth. The space at the bottom allows for an addressed sticker to be applied for postage distribution.”
See more images of the postcard here, and make a note of visiting the Substance/08 website too.
